| 56.0 Chem-Stud® | |
| 56.1 Introduction | |
| The Chem-Stud Anchor System consists of self contained two-part glass | |
| capsules and matching chisel pointed anchor rod which is installed using | |
| a rotary hammer drill and rod adapters. The Chem-Stud adhesive is a | |
| ester based resin material packaged in single use glass capsules | |
| designed for use in the installation of 3/8" through 1-1/2" threaded | |
| rod in solid concrete and masonry materials. It can also be used | |
| for reinforcing bars. | |
| During installation, the Chem-Stud System bonds the threaded rod to | |
| the base material so no expansion forces are exerted against the walls | |
| of the hole in the base material. This makes it ideal for use in anchoring | |
| to solid base materials ranging from soft common brick to hard marble | |
| or granite. Unlike expansion anchors, the anchor can be set close to | |
| the edge of the base material. | |

|
| 56.2.1 Chem-Stud Capsule |
| The Chem-Stud adhesive is packaged in single use glass capsules |
| which have pre-measured components. A separate capsule is used for |
| each size of 1/8" through 1-1/4" threaded anchor rod. |
| An outer capsule contains epoxy acrylate resin (vinyl ester) in which |
| quartz aggregate is suspended. The inner capsule contains a benzol |
| peroxide hardening agent. When the components are combined, they |
| form an adhesive mortar which mechanically bonds to the anchor rod to |
| solid base material. This type of system must be used with a chisel |
| pointed anchor rod which is spun into it using a rotary hammer drill. |
| 56.2.2 Chem-Stud Chisel Pointed Anchor Rod |
| The Chem-Stud System is designed to be used with chisel pointed |
| anchor rods. The threaded anchor rods have a 45° chisel point cut on |
| one end to properly mix the components contained in the capsule during |
| installation. A 90° point is formed on the internally threaded inserts. |
| The threaded rod or reinforcing bar used must have a chisel point to |
| mix the components contained in the capsule during installation. |
| 56.2.3 Chem-Stud Capsule Specifications |
| The following table lists the shelf life and storage recommendations for |
| the capsule. The properties listed apply to the cured Chem-Stud |
| adhesive mortar. |
| Shelf Life | 2 to 4 years |
| Storage Conditions | Store dry at 40° to 90° F. Condtions to 60° F before use |
| Color | Mixed Adhesive mortar-amber |
| Consistancy | Paste mortar |
| The mortar volume listed in the following table is for the mixed |
| material. The diameter and length may be different than products |
| offered by other manufacturer's capsules because of variations in air |
| content. When comparing capsules, use the installed mortar volume. |

| Chem-Stud Recommended Setting Time |
| The setting times the for the Chem-Stud adhesive mortar are listed |
| below. The setting time is the minimum time required for the mortar to |
| reach its published physical properties and is listed for the base |
| material temperature, not ambient air temperature. For example, |
| when making installations inside a building in exterior walls during the |
| winter, the temperature of the hole may be different than the interior |
| temperature and should be measured to determine the setting time |
| required. in order to insure proper mixing, the capsule contents should |
| be conditioned to 60° F. prior to use. |
